Shri. S. Somanath, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was presented with the GEP Excellence Award for furthering scientific understanding of our universe and our place in it. The award was presented by the Hon'ble Governor of West Bengal at the inauguration of the 13th Global Energy Parliament on "Science and Faith" on November 29, 2023 at the Raj Bhavan of Kolkata.
Dr. Bose applauded Somanath for inspiring the children of our nation to recognise that “sky is not the limit.” He commended the efforts of ISRO and termed it an inspiring effort of India leading the world in science.
In his acceptance speech, Somanath spoke about the linkages between science and faith in our understanding of the universe. Commenting on this year’s theme of GEP, he emphasised that it is our ability to marvel at the outer space that has given us a better understanding of the universe. He added that the human mind is not even capable of conceiving space that is in 11 dimensions, an indication of the limitations of the human mind.
The award was specially handcrafted by the GEP in the double-toroidal shape of the I-particle envisioned by Jagadguru Swami Isa.
